+ Meaning:

  2. to receive;
  3. to buy.

1. to GET + Direct Object meaning: to obtain

He has just got a new job.
She opened the door wider to get a better look.
She 'got her driving license' last week.
I'll get the money somehow.
They 'got permission' to live in England.
I 'got my passport' last week.
Try to get some sleep.

I think someone's trying to get your attention.
She really knows how to get results.

2. to GET + Direct Object meaning: to receive

He 'gets $1,000' a year from his father.
I got a call from Jane this morning.
This room gets very little sunshine.
What did you get for your birthday? = What presents
I 'got a letter' from my friend in USA.
I got a shock when I saw the bill. 
I will report back when I get a chance. 
I get the impression that he is bored with his job.

+ to GET + Direct Object meaning: Receive as a punishment or penalty

I'll get the sack if things go wrong.

* get something for something:
How much did he get for his car? = How much money did he sell it for?

PRACTICE: the sentences with "to get"

+ Choose the sentence you think is right:

I got quite a surprise when I saw her with short hair.
I got the impression that they'd rather be alone.
I managed to get a glimpse of him through the crowds. = see him for a moment.
I can never get her to myself because she's always surrounded by people.  = be alone with her.

We don't get much snow here. = it does not often snow.
He got ten years for the lesser crime of conspiracy to murder.

He's got a lot of money but he doesn't flaunt it.
